DC Comics and Cartoon Network's YOUNG JUSTICE!

culturalpop-DCU-YJ-newslink
Mattel Toys introduces DC Comics and the Cartoon Network's YOUNG JUSTICE to the DC Universe line of action figures! Following in the tradition of DC Universe Classics and the Justice League Unlimited series, this new line of figures seems well positioned to do battle on store pegs in 2011.
Mattel’s decision to launch Young Justice as part of its 6 inch format should serve as further evidence to action figure buyers that unlike the 3 ¾” scale, 6 inches is still considered to be a preferred and premium format for serious collectors.

Mattel Creates DCU Collector Parity and Defangs Ebay Sharks

culturalpop-retail-newslink
With news of Mattel ending their exclusive distribution arrangement with select retailers, perhaps now the toy market will allow for a bit of collector parity within the consumer ranks relating to DC Universe Classics.

Over the past 12 years it was because of such market-limiting distribution schemes that many fans/consumers were becoming increasingly disgruntled and alienated within the market. For collectors, this level of detachment could often be attributed to either not living within the footprint of retailers offering brand exclusives, or by the time fans were made aware that an exclusive line of action figures had even been available on the pegs, the hordes of Ebay sharks had already fleeced the isles in their self-serving and gluttonous attempts to swindle the average collector in over-priced auctions online.

Perhaps this newly instituted policy for non-exclusivity for retailers in 2011 will indeed generate parity within the market, while strengthening the demand for high quality action figures, and as an added bonus, taking the teeth out of the Ebay sharks.

This early preview of the DC Universe Classics CRIME SYNDICATE box set for 2011 is yet another brilliant example of DC and Mattel's understanding of the comics and action figure retail market. This level of commitment to the depth of DC's history as a publisher illustrates Mattel's ability to communicate with the consumer and the specialized toy market in general. WAR OF THE DEAD

culturalpop-emcetoys
It looks as though EMCE Toys has launched the Retro Action figure craze into the Horrorsphere with their launch of Zombie inspired action figures and collectibles for the fall of 2011. Dubbed as the Zombie Survival Headquarters for the 2011 New York Toy Fair, EMCE Toys unearthed a multitude of Zombie-themed figures based in the classic Mego-scaled 1/9 format.

As a departure from their earlier offerings in the retro category such as the Star Trek and Planet of the Apes lines,
EMCE has broadened the scope of their brand with the launch of a new line of Zombie figures called WAR OF THE DEAD; a concept based on a new intellectual property owned by EMCE's parent company, Fourth Castle Media. Rivaling the quality and craftsmanship usually associated with higher-end 1:6 scale lines; EMCE Toys may soon prove to be the new king of articulated decomposition and finely sculpted decay.

culturalpop-wizard-newslink
According to bleedingcool.com, the Wizard/Toyfare magazine subscription scandal apparently has reached new depths. As of 02/11/2011, Bleedingcool.com posted this response from Wizard regarding their failed subscription, "As our last issue shipped two weeks ago, all subscriptions are currently up to date. As is customary in the industry, we are working with other publishers on a suitable replacement for our subscribers’ remaining issues. Also, we cannot control third parties from selling subscriptions, but no new subscriptions have been processed by us for awhile."

Dracula In 1:6 Scale!

culturalpop-dracula-newslink
For many collectors, tracking down this release of Christopher Lee as Dracula in the 1:6 scale proved to be as elusive as finding a good Jennifer Aniston movie. The detail in the character sculpting really lends itself to low-light camera shoots. For larger images visit the CulturalPop gallery!

Toyfare’s Final Meltdown

toyfare-162-wide-2
It seems as though Wizard Entertainment has continued its downward spiral as a leading publisher of all-things-geeky. This negative turn for Wizard is evidenced by the latest news surrounding the cancellation of Toyfare and Anime Insider. According to an article posted on toplessrobot.com, both Toyfare and Anime Insider are currently a thing of the past and any possibility of future output by the publisher will only be realized via an online incarnation.
